We are facing the volatile, uncertain, challenging and ambiguous times wrought by the global pandemic and subsequent COVID-19 recession. As local government professionals, you probably have not had to face something like this in your careers, but the key to thriving and pushing through these crises is to remain calm. We have many resources that can help with responding in a measured, orderly and responsible way that we hope that you take advantage of. These resources can be found here https://www.resourcex.net/covid-19.
What I do want to talk with you about today is the need for courage. Courage to challenge the status quo. Courage to boldly propose the changes to the structure, processes, mandates, and other barriers that hinder the meaningful transformation of government. We need courage at this time to create the type of government that will be agile, responsive and resilient in the 21st century. You see, we can no longer tolerate the status quo. We can no longer simply state that “this is the way it has always been done.” The time for change is now.
If you know me at all, you know that I am an ardent proponent of change Not just for the sake of change but for the better of our organizations, communities, and people. However, change efforts are difficult and complex due to the fact that human beings are involved. No one likes change pressed down upon them yet this is precisely what will happen if the necessary steps are not taken now to transform government. Those that we serve will no longer tolerate the status quo. They will no longer take no for an answer and then politics will engage and force the change to happen. What I am advocating for today is the engagement of your teams in the work necessary to become a proactive and responsive organization. I want you to be strong and bold in moving forward to create a brave new government.
Since you are reading this, you are already aware of the power of the tools and methodology of ResourceX. You already have the blue print for success that, in order to be undertaken, will require courage. As I said earlier, change is not easy. However, it is imperative at this time to undertake the difficult work that will lead to fiscal sustainability. The ResourceX three point plan is designed to allow your organization to build upon the awareness, knowledge, and ability to transform your organization. It starts with building a visual representation of your financial situation with the Fiscal Health Tool. Your organization will glean a better idea of when and where financial distress will occur. Armed with this information, an organization can then use programmatic based business intelligence to make the necessary adjustments to programs and service delivery to help ensure that you are living within your means. Finally, for those that desire to leverage their resources on a regional basis, we offer the Program Mapping Initiative.
All of our products require bold action and leadership. In order to be truly successful, they require courage to act upon the data. One way to help ensure a more successful transformation for your organization is to engage more voices at the table to help design the organization of tomorrow. You cannot rely on just the usual players to help with transformation and certainly introducing change from the top down is not advisable nor sustainable. At ResourceX, we encourage the creation of multi-disciplinary teams, that have as their singular purpose, the mission to tackle a particular challenge. The teams exist as a strike force that is aimed at getting in and out as quickly as possible with the added benefit that they can take and roll out the solution within their own sphere of influence. These teams are also excellent ambassadors for change and can communicate within their departments to help with ensuring awareness and “the why” for action.
Government and the way in which services are delivered today is not sustainable. Transformative action is required now to ensure sustainability as well as to prepare for the next cataclysmic event that may happen in the future. Be bold and courageous now to lead this change. We are here to help when you need it. Please take advantage of the classes available on our website and always feel free to reach out to us for assistance. It is our honor and mission to serve local governments.
